Meet the Team
Since our beginnings in 2013 – founded by James Hogben and the now-retired Malcolm Keats – we’ve evolved from a traditional surveying practice into a trusted, forward-thinking consultancy known for clarity, quality, and connection.
I’ve been interested in buildings and property for as long as I can remember. That early fascination with how buildings are put together and how they can be transformed has shaped everything I do. My professional journey began in 2005 in an estate agency’s lettings and property management department, and from there, I’ve never looked back.
I moved on to a commercial surveying and valuation firm, discovering a niche in property management and inspections. As my interest deepened, I shifted into building surveying – where I gained invaluable experience in dilapidations, building defects, and structural reporting. Later, I returned to residential property management, sharpening my defect analysis skills and developing a deep-rooted interest in building pathology.
Over the years, I’ve worked across both residential and commercial sectors, from consulting and project managing for a major management firm to delivering planned preventative maintenance schemes and contract administration services. Early in my career, I completed an HNC in Construction and Property followed by a BSc (Hons) in Property Management and Investment from Salford University. I became a Chartered Surveyor in 2013 and have since trained with the Property Care Association in damp and timber investigations.
I’m also a qualified drone pilot, certified to operate unmanned aerial vehicles over 25kg. This allows me to conduct complex, high-level inspections – particularly for roofs and hard-to-access areas – safely, efficiently, and with the high-quality imaging required for insurance reports, condition surveys, and defect diagnosis.
Beyond formal qualifications, I’ve always believed in learning by doing. I’ve led several residential design and build projects, restoring run-down properties into vibrant, functional homes. That hands-on experience, combined with technical knowledge, helps me deliver honest, pragmatic advice – whether clients are buying, renovating, or looking to add value.
Outside of surveying, I’m rarely still. I’ve completed the National Three Peaks Challenge, the Edale Skyline walk, and regularly head out hiking with my endlessly energetic cocker spaniel, Tilly. Running keeps me fit and clears my mind, and more recently, I’ve discovered a love for baking – especially sourdough. Before surveying, I spent nearly a decade in the catering industry, driven by my love for good food and connecting with people.
I’m also proud to be a member of the Macclesfield Rond Table and I also chair the Macclesfield Beer Festival, now in its 30th year, which has raised over £350,000 for local charities. But my greatest support comes from home – my wife Laura, and our two children, Abigail and Finlay, who’ve cheered me on every step of the way (and who I’m quietly persuading into the world of property one day). Hogbens Property Services was founded in honour of my father, Christopher Hogben – a respected surveyor whose legacy I aim to carry forward with integrity, approachability, and professional excellence.
Hogbens Chartered Surveyors are regulated by the Royal Institution of Chartered Surveyors (RICS), the leading professional body in the property and construction industry. Our surveyors all carry the designation of MRICS. We are also members of the Property Redress Scheme (PRS).
JACK WESTWOOD
Building Surveyor
Ultrarunner and boxing enthusiast who recently moved up north from Winchester to pursue a deeper passion for running and the outdoors. Coming from a predominantly flat area, I’m drawn to mountainous terrain and the challenge it brings. I’m fascinated by buildings and property, with a genuine interest in how spaces are designed, developed, and improved, and I bring discipline, resilience, and a strong work ethic to everything I do.
LINDSEY RICE
Trainee Building Surveyor
Lindsey is currently training as a Residential Building Surveyor and Valuer with SAVA, building on a career rooted in property management. She has gained extensive experience across the property sector and is also a qualified Domestic Energy Assessor, giving her a well-rounded understanding of residential homes.
Having known James for around 15 years, Lindsey is fortunate to have his mentorship as she progresses through her training.
Outside of work, Lindsey is a proud parent to a young family who keep her both grounded and inspired. When not studying, working, or making memories with them, she enjoys running – a favourite way to clear her head and push her limits.
MIKE LALLY
Structural Engineer
With nearly 22 years in the construction field, I specialise in structural engineering and surveying for both residential and commercial projects. My work is grounded in strong technical knowledge and a commitment to impartial evaluations, allowing me to analyse structural problems thoroughly and identify their causes. This lets me offer clients advice that is clear, practical, and tailored to maximise property value and security.
I earned my degree in Civil Engineering and actively participate in several respected professional organisations. These memberships keep me connected with fellow engineers, encourage ongoing learning, and ensure I stay informed about industry developments and best practices.
Outside of work, I’m devoted to my family. My wife is an independent Estate Agent, which complements my career since we share insights and advice about the property market. Together, we renovate older homes for resale – a process that sharpens my understanding of building structures during surveys. Family time is spent going on adventures with our three children and three dogs, always finding ways to make our outings both enjoyable and educational.
DREW MARNITZ
Surveying Administrator
Drew is a Surveying Administrator at Hogbens Chartered Surveyors and is currently studying NEBOSH through Shields. With previous experience in the property management sector, she is now expanding her knowledge in surveying, taking each day as an opportunity to progress and grow.
Outside of work and study, she balances life as a mum with gym sessions and early morning walks—always fuelled by coffee. Being part of Hogbens has been a hugely positive experience for her; she values the supportive environment, appreciates James’ guidance as a teacher, and feels grateful to work alongside such an amazing team.
LAURA HOGBEN
Admin Assistant
Laura plays a key role in supporting operations and ensuring smooth day-to-day management. With a strong sense of responsibility and attention to detail, she brings both professionalism and a personal touch to her work-qualities that are especially valued in the close-knit team she works with, including her husband.
In addition to her role in the family business, Laura contributes her time and energy to a charity-run preschool, where she supports early years education and community development. Her work in both sectors reflects her commitment to helping others and making a meaningful impact.
Outside of her professional life, Laura is a proud mum of two, and shares her home with a lively dog and a newly adopted kitten. Life is busy, but she thrives on the energy of her family and the joy of everyday moments. When she’s not working, Laura enjoys catching up with friends, exploring the countryside, and indulging in good food at local eateries.
